Myths about Translation
As mentioned earlier, translation is a business. Therefore, turnaround times, contracts, and pricing are elements that clients must come to expect. There is a misconception that translators are volunteers, or that they can simply translate on the spot without need for preparation and time to work. In reality, a good translator will educate the client and let them know that translators need sufficient time to produce a quality product, and that a price is set and should be honored. In the end, the client will get what they pay for, as with any type of business.
Finally, many believe that translators are synonymous with interpreters. This is far from the case. Translation is not interpretation and interpretation is not translation. Translation encompasses the written word, while interpretation the spoken. These are two very different skill sets, and clients should be aware of this fact before seeking the services of either provider.
In a world is full of countless languages, and thousands (sometimes billions) of monolingual or bilingual speakers, it is daunting for those who set up shop under the banner of translator. For one to be successful, aligning client expectations are at the root of dissolving the myths and misunderstanding of the translation business.
